Review Topic: Adjustment of Status

We got downtown a couple hours before our appointment, which was on 20th July 2022 at 12:55pm at the Manhattan Federal Plaza Building.

Clearing security was a walk through with no queue, and staff there were professional but friendly. We arrived at the building 20mins before our appointment.

We went up to the 7th floor where we were guided to the desk, where they asked for appointment notice and passport, asked if we wanted a translator or had a lawyer with us (both answers were no), and a picture and fingerprints were also taken. Once all details were added, we were given our paper back with an “O” number and told to wait near door 2.

After reading all reviews, my spouse and I were expecting a wait time between 1-3hrs, however we were very surprised (and lucky) to be called in just 5mins after our appointment time at 1:00pm.

We went in and were asked for our appointment notice and both of our passports, then for our birth certificates and marriage certificate. After which my spouse was asked for her divorce from previous marriage. Then asked for any joint documents we had, we didn’t have that much as I had not received my EAD or SSN prior to the appointment, so we just brought joint phone bill and joint health insurance. The officer was friendly and said she understood why we didn’t have more joint information since I hadn’t received my SSN yet. She then proceeded to ask my spouse and I around 7 questions each, mostly about the kids, how we met, birth dates, parents etc etc., all easy to answer if a legit couple. She was professional and respectful. Then asked questions from my AOS form, the part where you answer no to around 20 questions (the legal part). No updated I-864, pay stubs, employment letter, tax transcripts or recent photos were asked for, which we were surprised about, however we did have a RFE for the I-864 and supporting documents which we did respond to around 4months before so this may have been recent enough for them.

Overall a very positive experience with good staff and a smooth process at the NYC branch. We were out by 1:20pm, so only a quick 20mins interview and made the most of the rest of our day in the city.

Around 24hrs later, we received our approval and as of 25th July our card had been produced. Finally can’t wait to work 🙂 and have green card in hand!

Make sure you have a face mask! They will not let you enter the building without one.
AOS for marriage - Our appointment was at 1:15pm, so we arrived at 1pm and was denied entry because we didn't have a face mask. Ran across the street and bought two at the deli. By the time we checked in on the 7th floor, it was 1:15pm. They gave us a number and told us to wait for door #2 to call us. There were a lot of people waiting... We didn't get called until past 4pm. I think we were the last ones to get interviewed...
Our officer was a nice man but we had a hard time understanding him with the face mask and accent... He told us there were issues with the new system and that it was so slow. My husband (beneficiary) had a hard time hearing the officer's questions, which was frustrating. And when asked about my age/birth date, my husband was off by a year... The date was correct, but the year was not. I think he got so flustered in the moment...
We submitted copies of my birth certificate, our rent bill, joint tax filing, two pictures, my husband's vaccination records, and our marriage certificate.
At the end, he printed a letter 'Notice of Interview Results' which said we completed our interview but USCIS is unable to complete our case at this time.
We received our approval notification 24 hours later.

Had a great and smooth experience at at the NY Field Office! My interview was based on AOS (K1 visa -> Marriage -> AOS) and my spouse came with me to the interview, as requested. Here's a detailed experience below:

Appointment was at 9:55am, and we entered the building at 9:40am. Security check was just like TSA check, where you had to remove your shoes, belts, wallet, etc. and put it through the scanner. Then we headed up to the 7th floor and there was no check in line. The person behind the counter took our appointment letter, my photo, fingerprints and ticket. We then waited for 10 mins before getting called by an officer for our interview (so fast...I thought we were gonna be waiting for at least 45 mins).

Our officer was super friendly, direct and kind. She asked for our passports and marriage certificate to start. Asked if I had brought an updated medical exam, which I said no, and that was no problem. Then went through all of the security questions with me, which is a "no" for everything. Then asked if we had any documents to support our marriage, and I provided our lease and latest IRS tax transcript which shows we married filed jointly. I told her I had more supporting evidence to show (bill, insurance, etc.) and she said what I already gave her was enough. Didn't ask us any questions about how we met, the proposal, wedding info, honeymoon, etc.

Then she told us our case will be under review and that our case is "very approvable", but did not give us the approval confirmation on the spot (which is normal). We left the building at 10:10am!

Will be waiting to hear back hopefully soon!

Had our AOS marriage interview today. Very smooth process. We had an 8am interview, only a very small line to get inside at that time. By the time we came out around 10:15, the line to enter the building was almost around the block so FYI if you have a mid morning appt!
Security is a breeze, just like the airport. There is a very rude security officer on the 4th floor though- she wasn’t rude to us but was very mean and yelling at a man who clearly hardly spoke any English.
We waited about 1.5-almost 2 hours in the waiting room before being called in by an officer. Officer was very professional but was easy enough to talk to. He didn’t have a scary or intimidating demeanor, it was more like he was on his computer just going through a checklist to see what we had to offer. He only asked my foreign husband three questions-
1. Where does your wife work
2. Have you ever been married before
3. Does your wife have any kids
-The officer also verbally read our current address out loud and asked my husband to confirm if he lived there.

The rest of questions directed at me, the USC:
1. How did you meet your husband?
2. Has your husband ever worked while in the US?
3. Husband have any kids?
-how old
-have you met his daughter?
4. Show me your proof of being a USC
5. Show me your marriage certificate
6. Do you have a lease together (I showed him that)
Then he asked if we have any photos and I brought out our photo album/scrapbook. He quickly flipped through the front only, and mentioned he didn’t have time to go through it all. I gave him 10 loose photos instead and he went through those and took out about 5. He took a variety of photos - 2 of us with my parents, a pic of us at our wedding with our minister, a few of my husband and I with different backdrops clearing showing different seasons and places (Bronx Zoo, on the Brooklyn bridge, in Miami, a few photos of us in the Caribbean).
Then I offered up copies of our joint AMEX statements (he didn’t ask, I offered). He only wanted most recent statement. Then I offered up our most recent tax return so he took that too.
He then asked my husband about 5 of the YES or NO questions from I-485.
After that he said he was going to approve us and we should have the green card in about one week. I started crying tears of joy in the hallway out. Officer thanked us for our patience. We were inside of his office about 15 minutes.
Just relax and be prepared, they may not even ask for 80% of the documents that you bring (happened to us), but better to be over prepared. If you are a real couple it will be fine.
Good luck everyone!!!
